What is a venous disease?

Venous disease is one of the most under-diagnosed conditions in both men and women. There are many forms of venous disease ranging from simple unattractive blemishes such as Spider veins to bulging Varicose veins (these are often painful) to more severe venous insufficiency leading to skin ulcerations. About 55 percent of American women and 45 percent of American men suffer from some form of venous disease. Early stages of venous disease are usually not problematic for individuals other than maybe some cosmetic concerns, but as venous disease worsens, it can become very painful and severely affect an individual’s quality of life.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are tiny purple or red blood vessels seen under the skin and are usually painless but can be unsightly. Spider veins often are hereditary and may be found anywhere on the body but most are commonly seen on the legs from the top of the thighs down to the ankles.

How are spider veins treated?

Sclerotherapy

  • Using a very small needle the doctor injects a “sclerosing” chemical into the dilated blood vessel. The medication causes the walls of the vein to close up and eventually disappear. A typical session may consist of multiple injections, last approximately 30 minutes and is often painless.

Laser Treatments

  • New technology in laser treatments can effectively treat spider veins in the legs. Laser surgery sends very strong bursts of light onto the vein. This can make the vein slowly fade and disappear. Lasers are very direct and accurate. At Ciao Bella Vein Clinic we have the most efficient laser to treat spider and reticular veins that has direct effects over the vein and minimizes damage to the skin. Most skin types and colors can be treated safely with lasers.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are dilated blood vessels that bulge outward from the skin. They occur when veins are not properly returning blood from the lower leg to the heart and can be painful and limit your ability to be active. They may cause other symptoms such as itching, burning, pressure and aching that typically worsens toward the end of the day. Severe cases sometimes lead to ulceration of the skin and occasional bleeding.

How are varicose veins treated?

Larger varicose veins (bulging veins) are usually a result of faulty valves in the saphenous vein of the thigh and or calf. If this is the case, then closing that larger saphenous vein is required and done with Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT). EVLT is a quick, minimally invasive laser procedure that is performed at our office. Faulty valves in the saphenous vein of the thigh and calf are often the primary cause of many vein problems. Laser energy closes the vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This eliminates vein bulging at its source. Blood flow from the faulty vein will naturally divert to the many normal healthy veins in the leg after the laser therapy. If there are any remaining bulging superficial veins, they can be treated by a technique called “Micro Phlebectomy. The veins are simply removed through tiny incisions using a small hook. Local anesthetic is usually all that is needed. All of these treatments are usually covered by most insurance carriers including Medicare.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Ciao Bella

Today and age with all of the advances in ultrasonic imaging we can diagnose venous disease from its earliest stages. This is very important because the condition can be easily treated before it worsens and becomes much harder to treat. However, finding a good qualified Ultrasound technician can be a challenge and many times people are misdiagnosed if not in the proper hands. At Ciao Bella Vein Clinic we truly believe you are in the best hands for the diagnosis of venous disease.
