For some people, there are areas of flab and fat on their body that just won’t go away, no matter how hard they diet or exercise. These places can be found on their tummy, breasts, thighs, buttocks, under their arms or even under their chin. Liposuction can be the answer to get rid of this stubborn fat once and for all.
Liposuction has come a long way since it was first introduced. At first, it was a rather brutal process where a one inch incision was made in the area, and the cosmetic surgeon inserted a vacuum cannula and sucked out the unwanted fat. Along with the fat, tissue and blood vessels were unintentionally pulled out, and the resulting bruising was extensive and painful. There was also a surprisingly long recovery time. One woman claimed that it took her a year to feel normal after her liposuction, even as she was pleased with her new shape.
Now, liposuction is a much gentler process. Surgeons have a variety of techniques to make the procedure even more safe, comfortable and effective. One type of liposuction is called tumescent liposuction. With this procedure, the surgeon fills the area with volumes of saline solution along with a pain killer and a medication such as epinephrine to cause the blood vessels to constrict. This cuts down on bleeding and bruising. The saline solution causes the area to swell up and become firm. This assists the doctor, who has a better feel what they’re doing during the treatment. The local anesthesia allows the patient to be awake, which removes the risks of general anesthesia. A patient who is awake also has better muscle tone than one who’s under anesthesia. This also helps the doctor as they manipulate the cannula to remove the fat.
Liposuction can also be done using ultrasound or laser. The heat caused by these modalities causes the fat cells to liquify and be more easily removed by the vacuum cannula. This reduces the amount of other tissue that is inadvertently removed during liposuction.
The patient should start to see an improvement in their silhouette about six weeks after the procedure. More good news is that when fat cells are removed, they don’t return.
