Preparing for a Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a generally safe and less stressful procedure. However, like any other procedure, you need to prepare adequately to avoid any complications during and after the surgery. Here is what we recommend.

Before the procedure, discuss with your doctor to determine whether there are any medical risks you might be predisposed to. Tell him about your health history, including any medical condition you might have and the medications, supplements and herbs you are taking. The doctor may carry out some tests just to be sure you are medically fit for the procedure. He may also recommend you stop taking certain medicines or foods some weeks before the procedure.

A liposuction procedure should be done by a surgeon who is well-trained and certified by a recognized regulatory body. It must also be performed in a fully accredited office, hospital or licensed ambulatory surgical facility. If the procedure requires removal of a small portion of fat, the surgery can be performed in an office setting. If it involves larger amounts of fat, then the surgery might take place in a hospital followed by an overnight stay.

Also, make sure you arrange for transportation after the procedure. Driving yourself with the anesthesia still in your system can cause a serious accident. We recommend you hire a taxi or ask one of your friends to drive you home.

Before the liposuction, the surgeon will mark the areas of your body that need correction. He might take photos of these areas so that he can compare the images before and after the procedure.

Surgeons carry out liposuction using four techniques. They are tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction and powered liposuction. In tumescent liposuction, the surgeon injects a solution of salt water, anesthetic and epinephrine drug into the area being treated. This solution causes the area to swell. He then makes small cuts and inserts a thin tube that sucks fat and fluids from the area.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses a metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy under the skin. It is sometimes used together with tumescent liposuction. Laser-assisted liposuction uses higher intensities of laser light to dissolve fat. The fat is then removed via suction. In powered liposuction, the surgeon uses a small tube that vibrates, allowing him to pull tough fat more easily.

Expect to experience some pain and swelling after the procedure. You might have to stay for a few weeks before resuming normal activities.
