Breast Reduction Surgery: An Overview

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, reduces the amount of fatty tissue, skin and glandular tissue to reduce the size of breasts. This is usually done to make the breast proportionate to the rest of the body and also to alleviate pain associated with large breasts. Many women complain of back pain and will seek a breast reduction to correct back problems. Those with disproportionate breasts also suffer from emotional discomfort as well as self-esteem issues.

You may be a good candidate for reduction mammoplasty if you:

– are in good physical condition
– are a non-smoker
– have limited physical activity due to the size of your breasts
– have realistic expectations
– are self-conscious because you feel your breasts are too large
– have neck, back and shoulder pain frequently
– have indentations in your skin left by your bra straps
– have irritated skin beneath the crease in your breasts

If you are interested in this procedure, you will need to choose a surgeon with whom you are comfortable. You will then be seen for an initial consultation where a thorough review of your medical history and current conditions will take place.

When you arrive for surgery, your surgeon will decide which anesthesia to administer. Once you are anesthetized, plastic surgeons will make the necessary incisions, remove the fatty and glandular tissue and extra skin. The nipple and areola is re-positioned. The incisions are then sewn up. Results are visible immediately following the procedure. You will encounter post-surgery swelling which will decrease over time. Final results could take several months while you are healing.

Your plastic surgeon will give you written instructions on how to take care of your incisions during recovery. A temporary tube may be placed under the skin to drain excess fluid and blood. Discuss any concerns and questions you have with your cosmetic surgeon.
