7 Things to Expect After Rhinoplasty in Chandler, AZ

Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) is an effective way of reconstructing the form of the nose. In addition to improving the ability to breathe, this can also improve the overall look of the nose. If you’ve elected to have this procedure done, our Chandler, AZ Cosmetic and Plastic surgeons will take excellent care of you through the process. However, it’s important to know what to expect after the procedure is finished to better prepare yourself for what’s to come.

1. Discomfort Immediately Following Surgery

Due to the nature of this procedure, you should expect pain or discomfort after it’s over. However, this should only last a few days until the pain becomes mild or a slight discomfort.

2. Nasal Discharge

Nasal surgery can leave bloody discharge expelling from your nose, which is completely normal. To help reduce the risk of infection, it’s important to change the dressing near this area as often as is necessary.

3. Coverage with a Splint and Bandage

The nose will be covered by bandages and a splint during the first week after surgery. This can be uncomfortable but it is necessary for a healthy recovery and protection. Above the bandage, you’ll begin to see swelling and bruising, which is normal and to be expected. Avoid touching this area, as it will be tender.

4. Dry Throat

Rhinoplasty can leave you with a dry throat due to your sinuses initially being covered by gauze. To help with this, it’s recommended to run a humidifier as you sleep, drink plenty of water, and avoid smoking and drinking.

5. Swelling and Bruising

Both swelling and bruising are normal parts of the recovery process after this procedure. However, many patients are surprised that swelling can extend to their upper lip and around their eyes and last for at least a week. To help reduce swelling and discomfort, ice packs and aspirin or ibuprofen are recommended.

6. Special Care

It’s crucial to avoid bumping your nose in even the slightest way as it is healing. This means being careful while you’re getting dressed but also avoiding wearing glasses. Any disturbances should result in an appointment with your surgeon as soon as possible.

7. Follow-up Appointments

Schedule and follow through with each of your after-care appointments. This will allow your surgeon to make sure you’re healing properly and there’s no sign of infection. These appointments also give them a chance to perform any additional procedures that are necessary for healing.
