How to Prepare for Gynecomastia Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ

For patients who are having gynecomastia surgery at our office in Scottsdale, AZ, proper preparation is key. While our doctor will provide you with the information needed to ensure you know what to expect, you can find useful information below. Use these tips to prepare for surgery and you’ll be much better prepared for what’s to come. What’s even better is the fact that this preparation can ensure a smoother recovery and experience overall.

Tips for Preparing for Gynecomastia Surgery

1. Discuss Medications You’re Taking

It’s important to discuss what medications you’re taking with the doctor before you go in for surgery. They may recommend alternative medications or lower doses to ensure the surgery can be done safely.

2. Avoid Blood Thinners

Ten days before your appointment for surgery, stop taking anything that can thin your blood. This includes aspirin, some teas, supplements, and certain medications. If you must take some of these, discuss them with your doctor.

3. Stop Smoking

The nicotine in cigarettes can prevent your body from properly healing after surgery. It’s recommended to stop smoking or using nicotine products 2 weeks before your appointment.

4. Find a Recovery Person

Assign a friend or family member to help you in recovery. In addition to driving you to surgery, they will also need to pick you up and stay with you for the first 24 hours after. This person will need to help you move around, take medications, and stay comfortable so you can heal.

5. Rest

Your doctor will discuss with you how much time should be taken off of work, depending on your situation. For most individuals who have sedentary desk jobs, they should be able to go back to work within 4-5 days. It’s crucial to take this time in order to allow your body to fully heal and recover.

6. Fill Prescriptions

Fill prescriptions ahead of time to ensure you have them on-hand when surgery has finished.

7. Avoid Eating or Drinking

Six hours before your procedure, stop eating or drinking. Your doctor will discuss your specific food/drink requirements to ensure you arrive ready to go.
