Understanding the Complications of Breast Augmentation

Any woman over 18 years of age can have breast enhancement with saline implants. However, if you want to receive silicone-gel or saline implants, you have to be at least 21 years old. Sometimes women decide on getting a boob job or breast augmentation and breast implants after giving birth. After giving birth, women’s breasts tend to lose their natural shape and firmness. If the breasts are asymmetrical, the surgery can also help them regain their shape and firmness. This type of surgery is usually required for women who have just given birth.

A breast augmentation consists of:

  • Improving the appearance. Breast augmentation involves the addition of breast tissue to replace the breast implant. Many women use this technique to improve their figure or to improve the size of their breasts after giving birth. In the dual plane augmentation, the implant is placed under both breast tissue so that they can appear firmer.
  • Improving the physical aspect. Breast augmentation surgery can also address the physical aspect of the body by improving its appearance through the removal of scarring. Scarring is a common problem among women who have undergone this type of surgery. There are many different incision options available for removing scarring.
  • Reversing the aging process. As women grow older, they often notice that their breasts begin to sag and become smaller over time. Plastic surgeons can successfully treat sagging breasts by placing them beneath the muscle instead of above it. This type of procedure is called the vertical incision breast augmentation. Another technique, known as the circumareolar incision, can be performed after giving birth. This treatment is performed when the mother has her nipples reduced or removed because the scars are located where the nipples used to be.
  • If you are considering breast augmentation, it is important to carefully select a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in treating your desired results. When selecting a surgeon, ask him or her for a consultation. You should schedule a consultation appointment before undergoing any type of surgical procedure, and you should always ask to see pictures of previous patients who had a breast augmentation done.
  • Scarring and recovery. Even though a very small number of women experience complications from a breast augmentation procedure, most of these complications are due to incorrect or excessive implant placement, poor sizing, inappropriate incision patterns, or excessive surgical trauma. In the case of excessive scarring, excessive removal of breast tissue or a combination of these factors, excessive scarring, or both, can cause problems such as skin irritation, capsular contracture, delayed wound healing, and excessive scar formation. A good plastic surgeon will be able to evaluate your case and recommend the best course of action to address your concerns.
  • Transaxillary incisions. One of the most common surgical complications resulting from breast augmentation is excessive scarring. The term “transaxillary” refers to the formation of scar tissue associated with the placement of the implant. Some of the most common causes of transaxillary scarring are: excessive weight gain, the improper selection of implants, or excessive surgery. Most surgeons will treat these situations with the proper techniques in order to minimize the risk of further scarring and, hopefully, to ensure that no scars are left behind.

As you can see, there are many variables when it comes to determining which physician go with for your boob job procedure. As always, it is important to thoroughly research any surgeon you are interested in before making your final selection. Make sure that your surgeon is board certified and that he or she has experience operating on children. Also find out if the doctor participates in After Board Education Programs and whether or not he or she receives continuing education annually. Doing your homework today can save you valuable time and money later on. With the right doctor, the right boob job, and the right procedure, you will have the best breast augmentation surgery of your life.
