Breast Augmentation surgery, for years, women have asked cosmetic surgeons,"Can you take some fat from down there and put it up here?"…Well now, the answer is YES!
Today, fat transfers can be used to augment many areas of the body, including the breast, buttocks, biceps, triceps, calf muscles, hands, etc.
The real beauty of this new and exciting procedure is that the materials used to augment the desired body part are your own fat cells. This makes the procedure unquestionably biocompatible and non-allergenic. If you’ve been considering breast augmentation, but are not quite comfortable with having a non-natural substance implanted into the body, you may want to look into the benefits of breast augmentation with fat transfer.
Breasts can be shaped precisely using fat cells. This great newer alternative to breast implants using fat transfer (or fat grafting) lets women enhance the appearance of their breasts in a much more natural way. The concerns that came with saline or silicone implants such as rippling or rupture have been addressed with this new technique. Also, the risk of scarring is minimal since fat cells are implanted through tiny incisions.
How is this procedure performed?
The fat cells are typically removed from the buttocks, abdomen or thighs using liposuction. This step in the procedure can be very beneficial to the patient because the body part used to harvest the fat will also be sculpted thus creating a slimmer appearance in that area. After the fat cells are suctioned, they are processed and purified by the doctor. In some cases, the doctor will use a technique that spins the fat cells before the cells are injected in the target area.
It takes three to four days for the first capillaries in the body to reach the transplanted fat cells. Unfortunately, during those three to four days, up to 30 percent of the transferred fat cells will die. For this reason, doctors will overfill the treated area to allow for the dissipation of transferred fat cells. The results of fat transfers may be long lasting and in many cases result in the transfer lasting a lifetime. If needed, more fat can be applied up to 6 months after the procedure. Each time the procedure is repeated, more fat will survive as there is evidence that frozen fat will survive better than freshly harvested fat.
During the initial liposuction for fat harvesting we collect excess fat that we store under deep freezing conditions so that subsequent transfer procedures do not require further liposuction.
The ideal candidate for this procedure are ladies with desire to increase their bust size up to 1.5 to 2 cup sizes and have no or only moderate sagging of their breasts. We advise to obtain a pre-operative mammogram and a 6 month post-operative mammogram to have a baseline with which to compare further studies needed in the future for medical reasons.
